As an Australian small business owner, preparing for the End of Financial Year (EOFY) and tax time can be a daunting task.

However, with some simple planning and understanding of key deadlines, regulations, and deductions, you can ensure smoother and less stressful process.

In this blog, we’ll look at the top 10 questions and inquiries that I regularly get asked from small business owners about EOFY and tax time in Australia, providing answers to get your started and references to help you navigate further.

1. Some Key Dates and Deadlines in Australia:

EOFY and tax submission deadlines can vary depending on how your business is structured and reporting requirements. As a general guideline:

- For most businesses, the EOFY falls on June 30th, with tax returns due by October 31st.
  - If you use a tax agent / accountant different lodgment and payment dates may apply.
- Quarterly BAS submissions are typically due one month after the end of each quarter.
  - If you use a tax agent / accountant different lodgment and payment dates may apply.
- Superannuation contributions must be paid by the 28th day of the month following the end of each quarter.
  - SG contributions are to be received by the superfund by this date. You need to allow enough time for SG payments to reach and be processed by your super fund, especially if using a SG clearing house.
  - If you don’t pay the SG contributions for quarter 1 in full and by this date, you must pay the super guarantee charge (SGC) and lodge a SGC statement by 28 November.

To accurately complete your tax return and comply with ATO requirements, you’ll need to gather various documents and records, including:

The Fear of Messing Up – It’s Real! Today, we’re diving into a topic that plagues both new business owners and seasoned pros – it’s the fear of messing up.

Let’s dive in… we’re going there because let’s face it, we’ve all done it (messed up in some way!).

It’s an unspoken thing among entrepreneurs and business owners, it begs the question… Why do so many fear failure in the first place?

Some common reasons that people in business fear failure include:

Disappointing friends, family, clients and strangers!
Wasting time and resources on new aspects of business (obsessing about getting it ‘perfect vs done’).
Not living up to expectations (mainly in our own heads!).
Marketing mishaps.

A lot of the time when we want to be successful it’s not just for ourselves, but for a bigger picture, like financial security, more freedom / time with family or future proofing for savings/retirement.

For those of us, reaching higher levels in our business it can sometimes feel like the weight of the world is on our shoulders and, as a result, we fear failure because we don’t want to disappoint others and ourselves.

… Oh, it’s worth noting that fear doesn’t have to be BIG and all-encompassing, it can be a simple thing like seeing a spelling mistake or missing an email from a client …

7 Tips to help conquer the fear creep:

Change Your Perspective: Instead of seeing a mistake, flop or failure as a dead-end, view it as a stepping stone to doing it better! Some of our most successful entrepreneurs and business people have faced many failures before getting it right.
Plan and Prepare: The more prepared you are, the less likely you are to mess up. One of the biggest issues that can lead to mistakes being made (and then compounding!) is a lack of preparation or rushing something to get it done or out.
Embrace the Learning: Mistakes are incredible teachers. They show us what doesn’t work and lead us to what does. Think of a time when you’ve failed or done something wrong in the past – what lesson did you learn?
Talk About It: Be sure to talk and share your fears or mistakes with fellow entrepreneurs or mentors, you might be surprised at how often these things happen … you’re not alone!
Practice Mindfulness / Take Scheduled Time Out: Techniques like meditation and mindfulness can help calm your mind and reduce anxiety. If you work from home or even out in the field, schedule breaks and a lunch break in your calendar to physically ‘stop and walk away’.
Break It Down: Sometimes, the fear of messing up comes from feeling overwhelmed. Look at tasks in smaller, more manageable steps to make them less daunting.
Accept that Fear as more Normal, it Can be a Good Thing!: We don’t start a business with the intent to fail. So remember that, when roadblocks or stumbles come our way, look at the ‘Big Picture’.

Remember, no one is perfect, and every successful business owner has faced their fair share of mistakes. It’s all part of the journey. Today, we are looking into the wonderful world of the Google Business Profile (GBP) and why it is a powerful free tool and can be a game-changer for your local success. Whether you’re a sole trader or a small team, having a GBP is like having a virtual welcome mat continually out for your business.

Keeping up with Google Business Profile names …

Before we dive into the present GBP, let’s take a trip down memory lane. The GBP has been known by many names over the years. It started as Google Places, then became Google+ Local, and finally, in 2014, it became Google My Business. In 2020, it officially became Google Business Profile. Phew, that’s a lot of name changes, right?

But despite these changes, one thing has remained constant – the power of this platform to connect local businesses with their community.

Why Do You Need a Google Business Profile

Whether you a bricks and mortar or a service based business, there will be a benefit for your business:

Visibility: When people search for businesses like yours on Google or Google Maps, your GBP helps you show up in their search results. It’s like a digital spotlight for your business.
Credibility: Having an updated GBP gives your business a sense of legitimacy. It shows that you’re active and trustworthy.
Essential Information: Your GBP provides crucial details like your address, phone number, website, and hours of operation. It’s like an online business card.
Reviews: Customers can leave reviews, helping you build your reputation. Positive reviews can be a magnet for new customers.
Photos and Posts: You can showcase your products, services, and promotions through photos and posts, keeping your audience engaged.

Getting Started with Your Google Business Profile

Ready to jump in? Here’s a checklist to get you started:

Check your eligibility – There are a few business types that may not be eligible, so make sure you check it out here.

Claim or Add Your Business: If you haven’t already, claim or add your GBP here

Choose a Business Category, location (store or office), area to service and contact details: Enter all your details (you can choose ‘yes or no’ for your location / address), add all other details, like phone numbers, logo, photos, website, hours of operation etc.
Get Verified: Google has multiple ways to get verified, including: phone or text, email, mail, video recording or a live video call.
Once you receive your code, enter and you will have a ‘blue tick’ on your profile!

Spend some time, once your verified and appearing live, working through your description, and ensuring details are correct and you are happy with how everything looks. Be sure to check it out from another device or computer or logout so you can see how it looks for your ‘potential customers or from your clients perspective!’

Some next steps:

Reach out to your clients and customers and ask for a Google review: Ask your customers for a Google review, make the process as easy as possible, provide the link (via ‘Get more reviews’ blue button, so they are only 1 click away!

Maybe you’ve received a negative review from a customer? … it happens! Be sure that the review is ‘real, ie a real client or customer known to you’ – this is important. Respond and try and resolve directly with them.

Fake reviews: In the event of a negative 1-star fake review, report it immediately to Google, click on the 3 dots to the right of the review – Flag as inappropriate, then choose the appropriate category. As tempting as it will be to respond, hold off and let the review process happen, as the Google algorithm may see your reply as signifying that the review is real, not fake and may slow down the process for removal by Google.

Some Easy Do’s and Don’ts for Maintaining Your GBP:

Do’s:

Keep Your Information Accurate: Update your GBP whenever there are changes to your address, phone number, or hours of operation (this includes public holidays) and review your main business category and description.
Engage with Customers and Clients: Respond to customer and client questions, reviews, and comments promptly and professionally.
Remember to Post Regularly: Share updates (re-share from Facebook, Blog Posts, Instagram), promotions, and relevant content to keep your audience engaged and shows them that you are active and current!
Sell Products? Add them to the Product Section.

Don’ts:

Don’t Overload with Keywords in your Title: Use keywords naturally in your title and description, and avoid keyword stuffing.
Don’t Ignore Negative Reviews: Address them politely and professionally and use them as an opportunity to improve if your customer or client has made a valid point.
Don’t Use inaccurate images: Sometimes using stock photos or images can give a false or misleading impression! Use accurate images.

Sometimes the social proof is also referred to as ‘herd mentality’ experiences that become credible and then supported through the behaviour and opinion of others.

Why Social Proof is Important for Business Owners

In a super competitive world when it comes to products or services, using social proof as a tool is a must for any business owner. We all work so hard for new clients and customers, so it’s only natural that our new clients and customers will seek out some form of social proof before working with you, adding your product to their cart, booking a discovery call or signing up to a freebie on your landing page!
